Your Seasonal Fruit and Veg Guide for January 2017
Happy new year! I hope you had a fantastic holiday break, with lots of tasty local food.
Here’s what’s in season for January in and around Ballarat.
It’s been a cool spring and early summer, but stone fruit are finally taking off and you can find cherries, peaches, nectarines and more at the markets around town.
Field-grown tomatoes are just starting to ripen, rather late, but they’re finally here. Start gearing up for tomato salads, ratatouille, or a cooling gazpacho soup. Conveniently, basil’s in season at the same time, so add some to your tomato dishes or make some pesto. If you have lots to use, pesto can be frozen to pep up your dinner in cooler months.
In a month or so’s time, people will be complaining about their zucchini gluts, but for now it’s still a fresh new treat. Small zucchini can be eaten raw if they’re freshly picked – try them in a salad!
Cucumbers are closely related to zucchini and ripen around the same time. Go beyond the long green varieties and try an apple cucumber or lemon cucumber – round varieties that are pale green or bright yellow, respectively. If you have a cucumber glut or find them cheap in the shops, try making tzatziki or make a quick refrigerator pickle.
New season’s garlic and potatoes
In the world of root vegetables, garlic that’s been growing over winter will have been picked in December and will be available now. You can buy it as a string to hang in your pantry (or any cool dry place) to keep throughout the year. Potatoes mature throughout summer, but the first ones will be happening around now, so if you want small potatoes for a potato salad, keep an eye out!
All the markets have berry stalls this month, so keep an eye out for deals, especially if you want to freeze some of make jam from locally or regionally grown strawberries, raspberries, blackberries or blueberries. January’s also the month for pick-your-own berries at nearby berry farms.
