It’s time to Eat Local, Ballarat!
Hello, Ballarat! Great to have you here for our big launch.
Isn’t it fantastic to live in such a fantastically rich agricultural area? All around Ballarat, sometimes just a few kilometres from our doors, we can find local farms specialising in anything you might want to put on your plate, from berries to potatoes, from trout to heritage breed pork. We also have award-winning independent and artisanal food makers bringing us delicious drinks, spectacular sweets, and fantastic bread and baked goods. All around us are community gardens, food swaps, and restaurants and cafes serving up local fare, and every weekend sees a farmers market in Ballarat, not to mention the ones in towns and villages all around us.
Yet sometimes it all seems a bit hard, and we find ourselves popping into a big chain supermarket on the way home from work, buying something packaged and trucked in from who-knows-where that we can get on the table quickly. It’s easy to look past the fact that multinational companies take more out of our communities than they put back in, or that the junk food and lowest-common-denominator produce they sell is bad for our health and that of the planet.
That’s why we need to keep reminding ourselves of the great local food that’s all around us, and encouraging everyone to connect with our farmers and shopkeepers, swap some zucchini with the neighbours, or take a stroll through one of or many markets on the weekend.
That’s what we’re here for. Every week we’ll be featuring local Ballarat food and offering tips and ideas for eating local. Along the way we’ll meet some amazing people, travel all around our region, and taste some of the Ballarat’s true treasures.
